Oppose Amending the Constitution to Restrict Free Speech

For more than a decade, numerous members of Congress have tried to amend -- with seemingly endless resources -- the U.S. Constitution to give the government the power to prohibit the physical desecration of the American flag. Civil libertarians have fought back hard with coalitions of veterans, religious leaders and other Americans who believe that such a constitutional amendment would undermine the very principles for which the American flag stands.

Demand An Independent Counsel for Torture Abuses and Release of Relevant Documents

Attorney General Alberto Gonzales is now the nation's top law enforcement officer and as such is responsible for investigating how our government's torture policies took such a misguided path. The American people deserve to know the truth about what torture tactics have been employed in the past and what tactics will be used in the future. Because Gonzales was involved in the development of the policies, Gonzales needs to commit to ensuring a full and fair investigation by agreeing to appoint an outside special counsel for torture and abuse investigations and prosecutions of civilians.

Support Free Expression on Cable Television and the Internet

In the coming weeks, several Members of Congress are expected to try to expand indecency fines on broadcast television and spread their use to include cable television and the Internet. This would mean many cable television shows, such as The Sopranos or Sex and the City, would need to change their content or face significant fines.

Urge Congress to Limit PATRIOT Act Search Provisions!

Three years after the passage of the PATRIOT Act, the movement to fix this broad and un-American piece of legislation is gaining momentum. Despite an unprecedented public relations offensive by the White House, Congress is moving toward revising the Patriot Act's most dangerous provisions.

Urge Your Senators to Defend Political Free Speech

Political involvement is a bedrock of successful democracies. During each election cycle, there are numerous organizations that become involved, whether by raising awareness about issues or by promoting voter turnout. Millions of people show their support for these organizations by donating time or money. The result is a more diverse national dialogue and a stronger America.

The rise in identity theft has put many people's personal information at risk. Now, legislation passed by Congress will create a ripe target for identity thieves by allowing the government to compile your most personal information -- such as your name, address, photo, birth certificate, social security number and perhaps even your DNA -- into a national database. Thousands of government employees will have access to this giant network, dramatically increasing the risk of your personal information being stolen.

Support Equity in Women's Health Coverage

Women in this country are being denied basic health care coverage, a situation that seriously compromises their health and violates anti-discrimination law. Insurance plans routinely cover prescription drugs, but fail to cover prescription contraceptives and related medical visits and exams. Only 58 percent of traditional indemnity plans, 70 percent of preferred-provider organizations, 77 percent of point-of-service networks and 78 percent of health maintenance organizations cover all of the FDA-approved contraceptive methods.

America Should Lead, Not Lag: Support Equal Rights

Despite the growing presence of women in virtually every realm of public life, discrimination is prevalent. A constitutional amendment is necessary to ensure that women are guaranteed the equality they deserve whether in public education, in the criminal justice system or in access to government benefits. The United States can no longer remain one of the few countries to fail to provide explicit equality between the sexes.
