Stop the Quick Fix

The latest calls for a national I.D. card are the most recent in a long series of proposals that have cropped up repeatedly over the past decade, usually in the context of immigration policy, but also in connection with gun control or health care reform. Today, the creation of a national identification system remains a misplaced, superficial "quick fix." While offering only a false sense of security, the creation of a national I.D. card would seriously threaten our civil liberties and civil rights. A national I.D. will not keep us safe or free.
