OCT. 15

More than 1,500 "card-carrying" members of the ACLU converged on the nation's capital for the third membership conference. The event is a rallying point for activists to mobilize in support of civil liberties at a time when the administration has asserted unchecked powers in the name of national security. Here, ACLU members filled the ballroom for "An Exchange of Ideas About Civil Liberties," a discussion between MSNBC's Tucker Carlson and Air America's Rachel Maddow, moderated by ACLU executive director Anthony Romero.

OCT. 16

Nsombi Lambright, Executive Director of the ACLU of Mississippi, addressed the conference during the morning session.

Shane Lundy, William Watt, and Daniel Heyman discuss the comics displayed in the Action Center.

OCT. 17

ACLU of Kentucky's Hannah Elliott (left) and Claire Kotheimer, winners of the Mary Beth Tinker Award for Outstanding Youth Programming, spoke briefly after receiving their awards.

The plenary "Abuse of Power: Law, American Values and National Interest" featured (from left to right) former Navy General Counsel Alberto Mora, ACLU Legal Director Steve Shapiro, NPR national security correspondent Jackie Northam (who moderated), former Nixon White House Counsel John Dean, and Publisher/Editor of The Nation Katrina vanden Heuvel.

2004 MEMBERSHIP CONFERENCE

More than 1,500 civil libertarians gathered in San Francisco to attend the 2004 ACLU Membership Conference. A variety of topics were covered by luminaries like investigative journalist Seymour Hersh, who gave his insights about the war in Iraq, prison abuse and the Bush administration.
